Something tells me this one may be controversial, especially to ‘white’ nationalists and other such people. However, I focus on uncommon knowledge so I ignore such objections…

Europeans are people native to Europe. This sounds simple enough but it’s more complex than most realise, partially because the definition of Europe has changed over the centuries. Most people think of it as a clearly defined and distinct continent, but serious geographers know better. Even just looking at a world map will tell you the truth – Europe is nothing but the far western side of Asia. Its division from Asia is political and ‘racial’, not geographical. All other continents are divided by bodies of water, but Europe is done by the Ural mountains which goes through western Russia, and even that is still debated. Funnily enough, few seem to have mentioned completely rejecting the notion of a division, though some have proposed renaming the two Eurasia. Though this term is now fairly common among geographers and the like most ordinary people have never heard of it so it will likely never catch on.

Location of the Ural mountains, the generally agreed-on division between Asia and Europe. Not very impressive from this view.

Furthermore, there was a time when the people we currently call Europeans (ie. ‘white’ people) didn’t exist anywhere. Since at least 1,200,000 years ago the entire world was populated by ‘black’ people (and not ‘black’ people as we define them now, but specifically by dark to darkest-skinned people, and maybe medium as well) until a certain point in time, currently thought to be about 55,000 years ago. However, they weren’t as ‘white’ as we would think of now; that was more like light-skinned and there’d have been a greater variety of tones. They’re what we see now as the light-medium skin tones among the world’s non-‘white’ population. This is because skin colour (as well as hair & eye colour) are controlled by different types of the pigment melanin, and each of those are controlled by multiple genes & genetic expressions.

The different types of melanin are black eumelanin (which isn’t actually black, just very dark brown. That’s why no-one has literally black skin), brown eumelanin & phaeomelanin (a kind of golden-orange colour).

‘Whiteness’ as we know it is even more recent – between 6,000 and 12,000 years old. Out of the 1,200,000 (at least) years of human existence that’s miniscule, even insignificant. It arose through a mutation to the SLC24A5 gene.

On a slight diversion, it’s believed it was within this time frame blue eyes first came to exist, though through a completely unrelated mutation believed to have arisen about 6-10 millennia ago. That mutation (of the HERC2 gene, which controls the adjacent OCA2 gene which codes for P protein which controls melanin production) is believed to have come about from a single individual, most likely a man, because almost all blue-eyed people share this exact same mutation. That man, whoever he was, was effectively the common ancestor of all blue-eyed people on Earth. However, considering that the vast majority of genetic knowledge is based on ‘white’ Europeans that most likely didn’t take these ones into account...

The conventional explanation for why this light/pale skin “evolved” is to maximise vitamin D production in less sunny climates. It’s conventionally believed that in certain latitudes & climates, dark skin blocks solar UV rays so strongly people can’t make enough vitamin D to stave off rickets & other skeletal diseases. However, this explanation is inadequate because:

1 – it doesn’t explain how the original ‘black’ people of Europe were able to survive for so many millennia beforehand without needing light skin,

2 – as I explained in another post, it’s now been shown that skin colour has no real correlation to vitamin D production.

(This is just my opinion, not researched anthropological fact, but it seems most reasonable to think ‘white’ people are basically just albinos. About 2/3 of their genes came from Asians [whether this means south or east I’m not sure. Their facial features tend to mostly resemble south but they’re believed to have a common genetic ancestor with present-day east Asians so I’m inclined to think both], the rest from Africans. Again I’m not sure exactly which ones. On top of that, there are groups in Asia like the Pakistani Kalash who, because of heavy past inbreeding, produce a high degree of albinos. Those albinos are visibly indistinguishable from modern-day ‘white’ people.

However, one could then ask why ‘white’ people come in different colours? Well, albinos all over the world come in different colours! Not all have snow white hair, pink eyes, alabaster skin & bad eyesight; that’s just a more extreme form. And there are different types of albinism; ocular only affects the eyes while oculocutaneous affects eyes, skin & often hair too. See pictures below for differing degrees of albinism…)

(So where did present-day ‘white’ Europeans originally come from? From what I can tell it seems to be north/ central Asia, which kind of links in with my albino hypothesis again)

However, as with all people on Earth Europeans aren’t all the same. One of the main divisions is in skin colour – those from north, west & east Europe tend to be lighter skinned with a higher prevalence of light hair & light eyes. Some have so little melanin they don’t even tan in the sun, they just burn, especially gingers so I’ve heard. These ones are sometimes known as xanthochroi (yellow-skins). Those from the southern parts (ie. Mediterranean, like Greeks, Italians, Spanish, Portuguese and arguably southern France) tend to have relatively darker/ browner skin that tans more strongly, with a higher prevalence of dark hair & dark eyes. They are sometimes referred to as melanochroi (black-skins), but obviously this is a misnomer.

There are other ways to subdivide Europeans. Wikipedia lists them as below. Note: these are technically linguistic terms but they are generally interchangeable with ethnic/ superethnic groups:

Mongolics – only the Kalmyks are in this group. They’re Mongols living in Russia, originally coming from Dzungaria in northwest China in 1607. Their ancient grazing lands are located in parts of China, Russia, Mongolia & Kazakhstan.

Basques – though they look like other ‘white’ people, their language (Basque) is totally unrelated to the Indo-European languages that surround them, thus it’s often believed Basques are survivors of some kind of pre-Indo-European population/culture – Neanderthals according to some! The Basques live in an area known as Euskal Herria (Basque Country) in the western Pyrenees on the border between France & Spain. This country is effectively split into 2 parts – northern (French side) & southern (Spanish side).

Semitics – this is purely a linguistic term. For demographics it’s better to call these people European (Ashkenazi & Sephardi) Jews. They’re not proper Semites; Semites are people descended from native speakers of Semitic languages, which is a branch of the Afroasiatic language family. Though many do know Hebrew which is a Semitic language, most if not all of them are descendants of European converts to Judaism (Ashkenazim from Germany & Russia; Sephardim from Spain), having known of it either from the Roman empire’s last days (when the original Semitic Jews fled to other parts of the world) or the days of al-Andalus (Islamic Spain, in which Christians & Jews roamed freely) or both. This group also encompasses the Maltese who originally came from Sicily, an island in the Mediterranean sea & now a territory of Italy.

Ashkenazim, Jews of  pretty much exclusively  west European  descent

Northern Caucasians – this further subdivides into northeast and northwest types, and are considered distinct from Kartvelians (southern Caucasians – Georgians, Zans & Svans). Speakers of this language group mainly reside in north Caucasus, needless to say, & Turkey. Despite the high-flying antics of American government censuses, Caucasians are not synonymous with ‘white’ people. Caucasians are their own people, and north Caucasians particularly are specific ethnicities – Abkhazians, Noxçiy (Chechens, who are ethnically mixed between European & Middle Easterner), Khwarshis, Hunzibs, Andis & many others.

Finno-Ugrics – this includes Finns, Hungarians, Estonians & Mordvins. Just like Basque, the Finno-Ugric languages aren’t related to the prevalent Indo-European languages. Instead they’re a branch of the Uralic family, whose homeland Urheimat is presently believed to be in the vicinity of the Ural mountains.

Turkics – this includes Turks, Azerbaijanis, Tatars, Kazakhs, Chuvash, Crimeans & others. These people (specifically Turks) have had one of the largest influences on the Islamic empire and the spread of Islam in history.

Indo-europeans – by far the largest group. This includes Slavs (Czechs, Serbs, Russians, Poles, Croats, etc), Latins (French & the closely related Occitans & Provencals, Spanish, Portuguese, Italians, Romanians, etc, so called because all their languages are descended from Latin), Germanics (Germans, English, Dutch, Scandinavians, etc), GreeksArmenians, Indo-Iranians (Romanis, Ossetians & Tats), AlbaniansBaltics and Celtics (Irish, Scots, Welsh & others!). Out of these groups it’s the Latins & Germanics who’ve had most influence on the rest of the world over the past 5 centuries. For example, it’s specifically because of Germanics that we have a very new belief that religion & science fundamentally oppose each other, and Europe as a whole has a greater history of internal religious intolerance & conflict than anywhere else in the world!

And these are just modern Europeans! Ancients were quite different, eg. the “negroid”/ “capoid” Grimaldi man of paleolithic Italy, the barely-known Pelasgoi/ Pelasgians of pre-Hellenic Greece, Silures (whom the Roman historian Tacitus assumed to be from Spain due to their swarthy skin & curly hair) of ancient Britain, Heruli of Scandinavia, Normans & Franks of France, Vikings of Scandinavia, ancient Anatolians, Etruscans of ancient Italy, Colchians, Scottish/ Welsh/ Irish Celts (who are believed by John Beddoe to be descendants of the “Africanoid” Cro-Magnons), Minoans of Crete, Mycenaean Greeks, Russian Kostenki man, and many many others.

We currently live in a global system of ‘white’ European rule, which I personally think was started by the TAST (trans-Atlantic slave trade) just over 500 years ago. Sometime within that period, specifically the 17th & 18th centuries, the European slavers & colonisers (who came from different countries: England, Scotland, Ireland, Spain, France, Portugal, Holland & Italy at least), as well as their supporters in government & academia, became obsessed with claiming the world’s history as theirs. That’s why even today ancient Egyptians & Jesus are believed by many to have been ‘white’ despite all contrary evidence. The ancient Greeks are likewise believed to be ‘white’ and are often called the origin of European civilisation, even though western Europe (not Europe as a whole) got much of its culture from invading Romans who in turn copied most of their culture (but not language) from Greeks, and Greeks certainly didn’t call themselves ‘white’. When they ever described themselves they called themselves olive, a kind of light/ medium brown (see picture below). Furthermore, a conveniently ignored fact is that Greeks were greatly influenced by ancient Egyptian culture & philosophy AND ADMITTED IT. Greek historian Herodotus said the Egyptians’ dark skin & woolly hair made them identical to Ethiopians, and ancient Greeks in general seemed to think ‘white’ skin was womanly and/or symbolic of cowardice.

*Bearing these Greeks (and Hamza Tzortzis) in mind,it’s easier to see why ancient Greeks didn’t see themselves as ‘white’

African influence on pre-modern European people & cultures

This is a subject hardly known about by anyone. It’s conventionally thought that Europeans & Africans only interacted and discovered each other through slavery, but history shows this has never been the case. Africans (and yes I’m talking about indigenous ‘black’ Africans) have been integral to European civilisations, cultures, education, spirituality, even existence.

Probably the best and most extensively discussed such example of this is the Moors. The Moors are a group of north/ northwest African Muslims who first came to Europe via Spain in the 8th century. Because of them Europe became acquainted with many things we take for granted today, such as education for females & the general public, libraries, oranges, lemons, pavements, cotton, silk, universities, street lamps, underwear & soap. I kid you not on the last 2.

Well I’m bringing back the pre-Moor days!

Just to be clear, nowadays it’s claimed this is what the Moors looked like:

However, these are more akin to modern Moors. As I explained in another post many/ most north Africans are mixed with ‘white’ European to a very high degree. The pure original Moors, as all pre-19th century Europeans knew and explicitly stated, looked like this:

Shakespeare, Queen Victoria I and many others made explicit reference to the Blackamoors, which was synonymous with Moor (as it was a contraction of the phrase “black as a Moor”). In fact, for much of European history Moor was the standard designation for all ‘black’ people regardless of whether they were actual Moors or not, because those were THE ‘black’ people known of back then!

(on a point of fact, Martin Lawrence’s 2001 film Black Knight had this exactly spot on)

Watch your tongue Moor!

The Moors first came to Europe in 711 under the command of a man called Tariq ibn Ziyad, who crossed what is now known as the Strait of Gibraltar* and defeated the Visigoths. The Visigoths were a Germanic tribe who were ruling Spain at the time. The Moors then established al-Andalus, an Islamic empire that covered Spain, Portugal, Andorra & southern France.

* (named after him; Gibraltar = semi-contraction semi-mispronunciation of Jabal Tariq, or Tariq’s Mountain)

Centuries later the Moors and their descendants in Europe, the Moriscos, were expelled from Spain by King Philip III  in 1609. He was inspired to do this by Queen Isabella I of Castille & King Ferdinand II of Aragon, pretty much just because they felt they were godless heathens polluting Christendom & European peoples. However, the Moors did not just move back to north Africa (as I wrongly used to think). Though some did, many converted to Christianity and moved to Italy, Constantinople & Sicily, while others went on further – some even as far as Serbia & the Balkans!
(On a point of information, they didn’t call themselves Moors. That’s what ‘white’ people called them. They called themselves Berbers, and they came in different tribes – Zaghawa, Sanhaja and Kabylia being a few. Modern Berbers also often refer to themselves as Imazighen, possibly revealing their Greek ancestry as the ancient Greeks used to call some of them Mazices)

Just for more information, the Moors were nowhere near the first Africans to inhabit Europe. It’s now known that the very first humans to inhabit all parts of the world were dark-skinned Africans, which includes Europe. There have been remains of humans with a Khoisanid (like the Khoikhoi & San of southern Africa)/ Australoid (like Australian Aborigines, or Koori) type morphology dug up all over the British Isles, and there is some evidence that Mongoloid-types came some time afterward. David MacRitchie asserts that this Mongoloid presence included a very strong strain of ‘blackness’, in the form of Huns and Scythians. He even goes on to claim that some of the Danes were ‘black’!

David MacRitchie is a Scotsman and author of Ancient and Modern Britons: a Retrospect, Accounts of the Gypsies of India, The Testimony of Tradition, Pygmies in Northern Scotland, Memories of The Picts, Hints of Evolution in Tradition and The Aborigines of Shetland and Orkney. He reckons there are 2 types of modern Britons – xanthochroi (yellow-skins, better known as pale or fair ‘whites’) and melanochroi (black-skins, better known as dark ‘whites’), and the melanochroi are mixed descendants of the xanthochroi & Australoids. Despite the fact he didn’t like ‘black’ people’s historical presence in Europe, he was absolutely staunch in his belief that they were there, as he was that the Moors were ‘black’.

‘White’ Europeans as we know them are between 6-12,000 years old according to modern genetic research, but it’s still not known for sure exactly how they came about. Were they among one of the later-coming morphological types that then somehow predominated over the others, or did they develop (or as some like to say, “evolve”) in Europe from the ones that were already there?

In another post I will mention individuals of the historical African diaspora in Europe.
